IEEE-SMC Malaysia Chapter FYP Awards 2021

    Congratulations!

On behalf of the IEEE SMC Malaysia Chapter, we would like to congratulate the students listed below (with the respective supervisors), on being selected as Winners of UPM IEEE-SMC Malaysia Chapter FYP Awards 2021.

FYP Title: Electroencephalogram (EEG) Imagined Speech Recognition using Deep Learning Approach of Long Short-Term Memory

    University: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

    Winner (Student): Yiam Kar Kar

Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Syed Abdul Rahman, Prof. Johnson, Prof. Dr. Ishak Bin Aris

    Abstract:

Imagined Speech is gaining an attraction in communication aids applications that are potentially widely used in disabled people that had difficulties in verbalizing their thoughts such as Dysarthria patients. The evolution of research development indicates the potential of decoding the imagined speech directly from the human brain via the use of acquired Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals that further analyzed and converted into a specific command that is used to control the smart devices or into a readable text for daily communication. The goal of this research project is to develop a deep learning classifier using an algorithm of Long Short-Term Memory that is able to classify EEG Imagined Speech of selected popular words such as goose, fleece, trap and thought. Another approach of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was experimented and the performance is compared with the LSTM network. The FEIS dataset was used in this project and the model training and testing was done using the local machine with the Anaconda software in python programming. Parameter tuning was done to achieve an optimized result and the classifier’s performance is evaluated in terms of accuracy, recall, precision and F-score. The classification performance using LSTM classifier outperforms CNN classifier with an accuracy of 92% compared to CNN classifier which is 77%. Overall, the LSTM classifier is more suitable in this use case of EEG Imagined Speech classification due to its good training accuracy, lower computational time, simpler network and easier fine tuning of the classifier.
